49th Fighter Group, Aces Of The Pacific is a newer edition to the Aviation Elite Units series from Osprey Publications. The book provides a very complete coverage of the famous 49th Fighter Group from its formation at Selfridge Field, Michigan on November 20th, 1940 up to it final victory over Formosa in March, 1945. The book is layed out into 6 chapters with a 10 page appendix of color profiles. The 6 chapters are as follows: 1) Forging The 49th; 2) Jungle Warriors; 3) Dobodura Days; 4) Lightnings and Thunderbolts; 5) Island Hopping and 6) Philippines Finale. While the main focus of the book is on the history of the 49th, it is written in a style that conveys both the sterile facts and the "human element" of life in the Pacific Theater in an east to read format. A real strength of this book is the photography which includes ones taken by official photographers and ones that were taken by the participants themselves. In the end, this book should appeal to those with an interest in World War II aviation. Included in this book are 120 black and white photographs and 40 color profiles. The book is 128 pages and is in like new condition. The author is William N. Hess with Chris Davey (illustrator) Edition published in 2004.
