The book, 50 Famous Fighters, originally published in 1968, tells the story of the fighter aircraft from the first flimsy aeroplanes flown during World War I up through the highpoint of piston engine powered aircraft which occurred during the final years of World War II to the supersonic jets in service during height of the Cold War. The author reviews and shows each of the 50 aircraft in a one to two page expose that includes a brief summary of the aircraft accompanied by a number of vintage black and white photographs. As a preface to this review, the author explains why he feels each of the covered aircraft has earned a "special place" in the pages of aviation history. Among the 50 aircraft reviewed in this book are the following: 1) S.E. 5; 2) Spad S.13; 3) Fokker D-VII; 4) Messerschmitt Bf.-109 E; 5) Grumman F4F-3; 6) Mitsubishi Zero; 7) Focke Wulf Fw-190; 8) North American P-51 D; 9) Supermarine Spitfire V; 10) Messerschmitt Me-262 A; 11) North American F-86 F; 12) Republic F-105 D; 13) MiG-21 (Fishbed C); 14) Dassualt Mirage III; and 15) McDonnell F-4 B.
