The book, 50 Famous Tanks, is a pictorial study of the development and use of one of the most interesting machines of war.  The tank was first deployed in World War I as a vehicle able to negotiate shelled terrain, smash through barbed wire entanglements, cross trench systems and neutralize the machine guns that dominated the battle field.  Tanks of this era were underpowered and unreliable.  At the beginning of World War II tanks had improved sufficiently that the German's could employ them as the spearhead of their blitzkrieg attacks on Poland and then western Europe.  While the British Army thought of tanks as a support vehicle for the infantry, the German's used them as an independant fighting force and as a result experienced many battlefield victories early in the war.  The tank evolved rapidly during World War II with the most successful designs being those equipped with weapons able to pierce any enemy machine encountered and angled armor and cast turrets able to withstand direct frontal attack , yet light enough to be fully mobile.  As tank development further evolved during the Cold War, improvements were made to armament, gun-sighting, power and mobility.  Even with these improvements, modern tanks can not successfully function on the modern battlefield without being accompanied by armored infantry carriers, self-propelled artillery and adequate ground support aircraft.  This book includes the review of the following tanks: 1) British / Little Willie (1915); 2) British / Tank Mk. 1 (1916); 3) French / Renault FT (1916); 4) British / Med.
