The Douglas A-4D Skyhawk fighter-bomber, which entered service with the U.S. Navy in October, 1956 was a small in stature American combat jet of the Cold War era. The Skyhawk was notable for the fact that it was designed and built within eighteen months. The tiny Skyhawk combineed a speed comparable with many pure jet fighters and the ability to carry an atomic bomb. The Skyhawk does not require folding wings necessary on most carrier-based aircraft due to its small size. Its simplified wing design also makes it easier to produce and maintain as compared with most modern, complicated jet aircraft. The Skyhawk is powered by one Wright J65 Turbojet, giving it a top speed of approximatley 700 m.p.h.. Armament consists of two 20 mm cannon and an underwing load can include bombs, rockets and guided missles. This old, out-of-production A4D-1 Skyhawk model includes illustrated assembly instructions, authentic U.S. Navy markings and a display stand. The package is in very good condition with a tape-tear on the upper right-hand corner of the front package. Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
