The book, Air Force Colors Vol. 1 1926-1942 represents the first in a multiple volume series that begins a pictorial study of United States Military aircraft color schemes from 1926 through mid 1942. The 1926 to 1942 timeframe saw a remarkable growth and development of United States Military aviation, which is reflected in the changing markings and colors used on aircraft from this era. This book chronicles the changes in aircraft, camouflage, organizational structure, painting schemes and squadron / unit insignia that took place between 1926 and mid 1942. While initially after World War I aircraft and personnel were reduced to a fraction of their wartime levels, a gradual modernization program was put in place after 1926 that increased the number of squadrons and personnel in the United States Army Air Force. Although the capabilities of the Untied States Army Air Force were much improved on the eve of World War II, when war finally engulfed America after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Hawaii on December 7, 1941, a "crash" manufacturing program was undertaken to put aircraft production on a war footing. The color schemes and markings from mid 1942 until the formation of the independent United States Air Force are the subject of Volume 2 of this series. The major sections of "Air Force Colors Vol. 1 1926-1942" are as follows: 1) Acknowledgements; 2) Introduction; 3) Standard Insignia, Markings And Colors; 4) Unit Markings; 5) Air Mail; 6) VIP Aircraft; 7) Blue Fuselages; 8) Aluminum Finish; 9) GHQAF And The Designator System; 10) Revised Designators; 11) Training Colors; 12) Fiscal Year Designators; 13) Camouflage; 14) Shadow Shading Of Aircraft; 15) Other WW2 Camouflage Colors and 16) The Colors. In addition to an informative narrative, "Air Force Colors Vol. 1 1926-1942" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 196 black and white vintage photographs; 2) 4 black and white illustrations; 3) About 64 color side aircraft profile illustrations; 4) Approximately 199 color squadron & unit insignia illustrations and 5) About 5 color illustrations. On balance, "Air Force Colors Vol. 1 1926-1942" represents a fairly comprehensive documentation of the United States Army Air Force aircraft operated during this era and is sure to please the military aviation enthusiast and modeler alike.
