The documentary, Air Power: Air Superiority - U.S. / Soviet Fighter Matchup, examines the preeminent jet fighters fielded in the late 1980s by both the United States and the former Soviet Union. The jet fighters examined in detail are as follows: 1) Su-27 Flanker (Soviet Union); 2) MiG-29 Fulcrum (Soviet Union); 3) F-14 Tomcat (U.S.); 4) F-15 Eagle (U.S.); 5) F-16 Falcon (U.S.) and 6) F/A-18 Hornet (U.S.). This video highlights the differences in missions, design philosophies and technological capabilities of each aircraft. The viewer will learn why the F-18 is probably the most agile fighter and why the Su-27 has excellent maneuvering capability. As far as similarities, this video argues that the MiG-29 is most like the F/A-18 in its combat role. The viewer of this video also goes on location to a Soviet air defense base to witness a Mig-29 flight evaluation and an SU-27 low altitude flight demonstration. Rounding out this documentary are a number of interviews with top Soviet and U.S. designers, engineers and military officers in which they outline the mission goals of each aircraft along with their strengths and weaknesses. A final segment of this video takes a look at the future of Soviet and U.S fighter aircraft design including the MiG 2000 and Stealth aircraft envisioned for the future. This video is certain to appeal to anyone who has an interest in aviation history. Full screen in color. Released in 1990. Runtime 60 minutes.
