The documentary, Air Power: Artic Warriors, tells the fascinating story of the 21st Tactical Fighter Wing assigned the mission of protecting Alaskan air space from probing Soviet aircraft including the large Bear bomber. Alaska was on the "front-lines" during the height of the Cold War and despite the often-horrible weather conditions, units of the United States Air Force were frequently scrambled in order to intercept a "bogey" flying towards North America from the direction of the former Soviet Union. In "Artic Warriors", the viewer will meet the F-15 Eagle pilots of the 21st Tactical Fighter Wing and their colleagues flying Alaskan based A-10 Warthogs as they perform their missions over the vast distances and extreme weather conditions near the Artic circle. Specific footage shot for this documentary shows the following: 1) F-15 Eagles as they are put through their paces by pilots who are practicing air-to-air combat; 2) United States Air Force E-3 AWACS aircraft as they are used to provide high-altitude surveillance and 3) The interception of a Soviet Bear bomber. "Artic Warriors" provides an in-depth look at the flight operations and ground control activities that are at the frontline of United States security. It is an action packed aerial adventure through some of the most daunting combat training airspace in North America. This video is certain to appeal to anyone who has an interest in aviation history. Full screen in color. Released in 1989. Runtime 60 minutes.
