The film, Air power: Dawn Of The Dog Fight chronicles the battles and legendary aces who defined the air combat tactics from World War I through the Vietnam War.  Through a wealth of historic footage and the recollections of surviving pilots, "Air Power: Dawn Of The Dog Fight" tells the story of what it was like to battle your enemy in the skies above the battlefield.  The opening segments of "Air Power: Dawn Of The Dog Fight" focus on World War I where the British Sopwith Camel and German Fokker D-VII faced off piloted by men with a life expectancy of just 17 1/2 hours.  In World War II, British Spitfires and Hurricanes take on waves of German Bombers and escorting by Messerschmitt Bf-109s in the Battle Of Britain.  Later in the war, United States Army Air Corps pilots take on German Luftwaffe pilots flying the revolutionary German Messerschmitt Me-262 in the skies over Europe.  Within one year of the United States entry into World War II in late 1941, Grumman Hellcat fighters are deployed in the Pacific Ocean combat theater to protect the United States Navy ships from vicious assaults of Japanese Misubishi Zeros.  By the early 1950s, the Korean War became the stage for the first all-jet air battles that pitted American F-80 Shooting Stars and F-86 Sabres against the former Soviet Union's best jet fighter, the MiG-15.  The final segment of "Air Power: Dawn Of The Dog Fight" reveals that the Vietnam War represented the most sophisticated combat arena to date.  Initially during the Vietnam War, McDonnell F-4 Phantoms were only equipped with air-to-air missiles to take on the MiG-17s, 19s and 21s of the Vietnam Air Force.  These early F-4 Phantoms had no cannons or machine-guns for up-close dog fighting.  The result was significant drop in the "kill" ratio to 4 to 1 from a high of 10 to 1 recorded during the Korean War.  Recognizing the need for upclose armament like a multiple barrel cannon, the United States Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps subsequently added it to the newest F-4 Phantoms entering the air war over Vietnam.  Aside from the interesting aerial film footage, "Air Power: Dawn Of The Dog Fight" includes interviews of aces from World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  "Air Power: Dawn Of The Dog Fight" is sure to appeal to any military aviation enthusiast.  Full screen in color.  Released in 1990.  Runtime 60 minutes.
