The book, American Civil War Artillery 1861 - 1865 (Field & Heavy Artillery) details the development and usage of both field and Heavy artillery of both sides of the American Civil War.  Perhaps the most important arm of both the Confederate and Union Armies in the prosecution of the American Civil War was the artillery branch of service.  Because of the length of coastline of the United States, army doctrine early on placed an emphasis on its 'Heavy Artillery' mounted in coastal defensive fortifications while 'Field Artillery' units were assigned across the fighting fronts.  By the start of the Civil War, the Napoleon and rifled cannon provided a range and power previously unknown on American soil.  As the Civil War battles continued the development of artillery doctrine, equipment and logistics accelerated such that by the end of the war, especially on the Union side, the artillery branch of service was a major element of the overall fighting capabilities of both armies.  This book is broken down into the following two parts: 1) Field Artillery and 2) Heavy Artillery.  The major sections of Part one are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Organization Of The U.S. Army Field Artillery; 3) Organization of the Confederate Field Artillery; 4) Equipment; 5) Ammunition; 6) Fuses; 7) The M1857 Napoleon; 8) The 10 And 20 Pdr. Parrott Rifle; 9) The 3 in. Ordnance Rifle; 10) The M1841 12 Pdr. Howitzer; 11) The Mountain Howitzer; 12) The Dahlgren Boat Howitzer; 13) Wiard Field Artillery; 14) The Whitworth Gun; 15) Conclusion; 16) Glossary; 17) Select Bibliography and 18) Plates.  The major sections of Part two are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Columbiads; 3) Howitzers; 4) Rifled Guns; 5) Parrott Rifles; 6) Mortars; 7) Naval Guns; 8) British-Made Guns; 9) Ammunition; 10) Heavy Artillery Usage; 11) U.S. Army Organization; 12) C.S. Organization; 13) Conclusion; 14) Select Bibliography and 15) The Plates.  An index follows the two major parts of this book.  In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 77   vintage black and white photographs; 2) 9 black and white illustrations and 3) About 46 color illustrations many with artillery specifications.  This book is 100 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Philip Katcher with Tony Bryan (illustrations)  Edition published in 2001.
