The book, American Civil War Artillery 1861 - 1865 (Field & Heavy Artillery) details the development and usage of both field and Heavy artillery of both sides of the American Civil War. Perhaps the most important arm of both the Confederate and Union Armies in the prosecution of the American Civil War was the artillery branch of service. Because of the length of coastline of the United States, army doctrine early on placed an emphasis on its 'Heavy Artillery' mounted in coastal defensive fortifications while 'Field Artillery' units were assigned across the fighting fronts. By the start of the Civil War, the Napoleon and rifled cannon provided a range and power previously unknown on American soil. As the Civil War battles continued the development of artillery doctrine, equipment and logistics accelerated such that by the end of the war, especially on the Union side, the artillery branch of service was a major element of the overall fighting capabilities of both armies. This book is broken down into the following two parts: 1) Field Artillery and 2) Heavy Artillery.
