The book, Amphibious Operations, represents a pictorial study of modern amphibious operations in the 20th century.  While warriors for centuries have crossed the seas to attack an enemy force, it was not until World War II that amphibious operations became an integral part of military operations.  The logistics of landing whole armies on a hostile shoreline required the development of purpose built vessels to transport assault troops, equipment and stores and to provide the necessary initial fire support.  Once on the beaches, machines and methods were developed to destroy enemy obstacles.  At the start of World War II amphibious assault operations were far from a proven method of attacking a distant enemy force but by the conclusion of the war all the major impediments to launching such military operations had been overcome.  Since World War II, with the exception of Inchon in Korea, Suez and the more recent Falklands, amphibious operations have only been conducted on a small scale.  The main sections of the book, Amphibious Operations, are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) North - West Europe, 1940 - 42; 3) North Africa, 1942: Operation Torch; 4) Sicily And Italy, 1943 - 44; 5) Normandy And The Rhine; 6) South East Asia And The Pacific Theatres; 7) The Korean War, 1950 - 53, And Suez, 1956; 8) The Vietnam Wars; 9) U.S. Forces In Readiness; 10) U.S.S.R.; 11) Great Britain and 12) Index.  In addition to informative picture captions, this book includes the following: 1) 213 black and white photographs; 2) 3 black and white illustrations and 3) 1 map.  The book, Amphibious Operations, is highly recommended to anyone interested in this form of modern warfare.  This book is 209 pages and is in very good condition.  The author is Barry Gregory.  Edition published in 1988.
