The movie, Anzio, is based on a novel by Wynford Vaughan Thomas and centers on the Allied landing at the beaches of Anzio, Italy in 1943. This battle turned out to be one of the bloodiest battles of the war thanks to an overly cautious general whose indecision allowed the unprepared Germans time to erect the Caesar Line of defense around Rome thus prolonging the conflict. The central character in the movie is an unarmed seen-it-all war correspondent named Dick Ennis who finds himself in the thick of the battle. Ennis along with a scrappy corporal named Rabinoff get caught behind enemy lines and must then fight their way back to warn the Allied soldiers of the German's impending attack. Starring Robert Mitchum, Peter Falk and Robert Ryan among others. Widescreen in color. Released in 1968. Runtime 117 minutes.
