The "Battle Of The Bulge" was the last major German offensive to occur in the Western European combat theater during the closing months of World War II. The German's gathered three armies to attack American forces through the Ardennes at their weakest point. While admittedly a long shot for success, the German's early on in this epic battle seemed to have the upper hand especially when the Allied Air Forces were grounded due to inclement weather. Once the skies cleared, it was only a matter of time before the German Armies would be defeated. In the book Ardennes 1944 - Hitler's Last Great Gamble In The West, the author reviews the planning of the attack and the course of events, including the heroic defense of Bastogne by the famed 101st Airborne Division and the numerous heroic delaying actions fought by small pockets of "new" GIs who had been inadvertently placed in harms way because of the prevailing feeling among Allied Generals that this was a "quiet" sector of the front. The format of this book includes the following: 1) Assessment of each commander's campaign strategy; 2) Chronicles the progress of the fighting; and 3) Includes a brief guide to the Ardennes Battlefield today. In addition, this book contains more than 90 illustrations including maps, charts and color plates which accompany the text and a series of three-dimensional battle maps that serve to mark the critical stages of the battle. This book is 96 pages and is in excellent condition. The author is James Arnold with David Chandler (general editor). Edition published in 1990.
