The 20th Century has proven to be one of the most violent eras in world history. By way of comparison, in 1900 the world was dominated by a handful of European colonial powers and there were less than 40 independant states in the world. By 1919 the picture had altered considerably; colonies throughout the world had changed hands; the Austro-Hungarian Empire had been destroyed and two new great powers Japan and the United States had emerged on the scene. By the end of World War II, the map in Europe had changed again; there were only two "superpowers" and the colonial empires were breaking-up. There are now over 160 independent countries which is a number that continues to grow over tme. Many of these changes have occurred as a result of war, whether in lesser-known conflicts or more recent wars of liberation in Africa and Asia or in the two devestating World Wars. The book, Atlas Of The 20th Century Warfare, does a credible job of documenting the many geographic changes that have taken place in this century as a result of armed conflict. Included in this book are over 200 maps with related authoritative explanatory text and photographs. This book would be of interest to anyone interested in 20th Century military history. This book is 256 pages and is in excellent condition with some light rubbing on the dust cover. The authors are Donald Sommerville and John N. Westwood with an introduction from John Keegan and cartography work by Richard Natkiel. Edition published in 1982.
