The book, Avenger At War, chronicles the development and operational use of this large single engine aircraft in World War II.  While few people would ever claim that the Grumman TBF Avenger was the best aircraft of World War II especially given the fact that it was overburdened with excess equipment and chronically underpowered, approximately 10,000 units of all variants were produced between 1942 and 1945.  The Grumman F6F Hellcat and Vought F4U Corsair only surpassed this production number in quantity.  Beyond the production numbers, the Avenger's versatility, great range capability and rugged construction helped to ensure that it would have an important role in helping to defeat the Japanese forces in the Pacific Combat Theater and the German U-boat menace in the North Atlantic Ocean during the war.  This highly adaptable aircraft was capable of carrying bombs, depth charges, rockets and torpedoes, which meant that it could operate as a dive bomber, torpedo bomber, as well as, both a day and night bomber.  From a statistical perspective, Grumman TBF Avengers had a hand in destroying no fewer than 60 Japanese warships.  That said, perhaps the Grumman TBF Avenger's greatest contribution was in the North Atlantic Ocean where its role in defeating the German U-boat wolf packs was an important factor in winning the war in Europe.  In the end, "Avenger At War" portrays this adaptable aircraft in all its uses and while serving a number of different Allied navies.  "Avenger At War" includes the following sections: 1) Foreword; 2) Introduction and Acknowledgements; 3) Behind the Scenes; 4) To War; 5) Tech Rep; 6) First Successes; 7) Flying the Avenger; 8) View from the Turret; 9) The Cheap Seats; 10) Plane Captain; 11) The Leatherneck Contribution; 12) Choose Your Weapons; 13) Sub Killer; 14) Fleet Air Arm; 15) Wrecks and Battle Damage; 16) The Way West; 17) Battles of the Philippine Sea; 18) Avenger by Night; 19) Eight Unfriendlies; 20) Markings and 21) Epilogue.  In addition to an informative narrative that highlights both personal experiences & eyewitness accounts of the Avenger fighting, "Avenger At War" includes approximately 179 black and white photographs.  This book is 128 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Barrett Tillman.  Edition published in 1990.
