The Grumman TBF Avenger, which was also designated as a TBM if produced by General Motors was designed as a torpedo bomber during World War II for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It first entered service in 1942 and had its first taste of combat during the Battle Of Midway. Prior to the last copies being retired in the 1960s, over 9,800 were produced and they saw service in the following armed forces: 1) United States Navy; 2) United Sates Marine Corps; 3) Royal Navy; 4) Royal Canadian Navy and 5) Royal New Zealand Air Force. While it was initially developed as a torpedo bomber, it could be adapted to carry up to 2,000 lbs of bombs or ASW armament.
