The book, Avro Vulcan describes the design evolution and operational history of the British delta-wing strategic bomber that is perhaps the most durable element of the “Cold War” era “V” force.  By any standards, the Avro Vulcan story is quite remarkable.  It has served with distinction not only for its original guise as the backbone of Britain’s nuclear deterrent, but in many expanded roles as diverse as low level strike / attack, maritime reconnaissance, air-to-air refueling tanker and engine test bed.  While most Avro Vulcan crews grew to respect the Vulcan for its remarkable capabilities and its excellent handling characteristics, it could display “savage behavior” if not treated with due respect, particularly during an asymmetric landing approach.  Some of the negative attributes of the Avro Vulcan bomber included a rather cramped and claustrophobic crew compartment, as well as, the fact that in an emergency only the pilot and copilot had evacuation seats.  On the other hand, as is typical of great aircraft, when its days as a strategic nuclear bomber came to end, it had a new lease of life by being modified into the Victor air-to-air refueling tanker.  Dramatic in design and realization, the Avro Vulcan has earned its prominent place in the post World War II Royal Air Force history and as such is a story well worth the telling.  The major sections of “Avro Vulcan” are as follows: 1) Acknowledgements; 2) Foreword; 3) Chapter 1 – A New Shape In The Sky; 4) Chapter 2 – Testing And Development: The B 1; 5) Chapter 3 – XA897: Triumph And Tragedy; 6) Chapter 4 – The Vulcan Enters Service; 7) Chapter 5 – Second Generation: The B 2; 8) Chapter 6 – Vulcan And Blue Steel; 9) Chapter 7 – Vulcan And Skybolt; 10) Chapter 8 – Maintaining The Deterrent; 11) Chapter 9 – NEAF Bomber Wing; 12) Chapter 10 – Conventional Strike Force; 13) Chapter 11 – ‘Black Jack’: A Dramatic Swansong; 14) Appendix – Aircraft Allocation, Service And Disposal Details and 15) Index.  In addition to an informative narrative, “Avro Vulcan” includes the following features: 1) Approximately 134 black and white photographs and 2) About 5 black and white illustrations.  This book is 187 pages and is in very good condition.  The author is Robert Jackson.  Edition published in 1987.
