The Boeing B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber, the successor to the famous B-17 Fortress, was manufactured from 1943 through 1946. By the time production had ceased, almost 4,000 units of all variants had been built in four different factories. The B-29 Superfortress never achieved the notoriety of the Boeing B-17 and Consolidated B-24 Liberator in part because it was deployed in 1944, which was well into World War II and partly because its missions were flown from relatively isolated airbases in Burma, China, India and the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean. That said undoubtedly the B-29's greatest notoriety came when an atomic bomb, (Little Boy), was dropped by the "Enola Gay" on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and a second atomic bomb (Fat Man) was dropped by "Bockscar" on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. These two bombs dropped by Boeing B-29s effectively broke the Japanese will to fight and thus directly lead to the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japan to Allied Forces on September 2, 1945. As the United States Army Air Corp. and later the United States Air Force moved from propeller-driven to jet bombers, the B-29 was relegated to secondary duties including aerial tanker and as a launch platform for various X aircraft like the X-1 used to break the sound barrier. Today about 24 B-29s are on display throughout the United States. The book, B-29 Superfortress Walk Around (Color) series represents an inside and out pictorial review of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. While primarily a pictorial review, "B-29 Superfortress Walk Around (Color Series)" does include the following text sections: 1) Introduction; 2) The Four B-29 Plants; 3) The Bone Yard and 4) B-29s in Existence Today. In addition to this interesting text, " B-29 Superfortress Walk Around (Color Series)" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 31 black and white photographs; 2) About 173 color photographs; 3) 6 color illustrations; 4) 12 color side aircraft profile illustrations; 5) 1 three-view Boeing B-29 Superfortress black and white illustration with specifications; 6) 1 page titled "50th Bomb Wing, Twentieth Air Force Tail Markings" color illustration; 7) 1 page titled "Typical WWII Bomb Parts" color illustration; 8) 1 page titled "Some Ordnance Types Carried BY USAAF B-29 Fleet During WWII" color illustration; 9) 1 page titled "B-29 Crew Station Areas" color illustration and 10) 2 color cover paintings. This book is 80 pages and is in new condition. The author is Dennis M. Savage, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) with Don Greer (colorist) and Ike Anderson (illustrations). Edition published in 2008.
