The book, B-36 In Action (# 42) represents an authoritative and concise pictorial study of the B-36 "Peacemaker", America's first true intercontinental strategic bomber.  The B-36 Peacemaker was manufactured by the Convair Aircraft Company and was the largest bomber built up to that time.  The B-36 represented a bridge between the piston engine bombers of World War II and the pure jet B-47, B-52 and B-58 strategic bombers that became available during the latter part of the 1950s.  While the B-36 Peacemaker was relatively slow when compared to the jet fighters of the era, it could fly at altitudes that, until the last few years of its service life, were higher than most pursuing enemy fighter aircraft could fly.  It also was out of range of anti-aircraft fire including most surface-to-air missile systems of the era.  The B-36 was also capable of remaining airborne for two days without refueling, which was a remarkable feat when compared to other bombers available in the 1950s.  Despite its seemingly obsolete appearance, the B-36 pushed 1950s state-of-the-art technologies further than any other aircraft of its era.  Technological obstacles that had to be overcome included structural challenges, engine cooling problems at high altitudes, as well as, the maintenance of sophisticated gun and bombing systems.  The major sections of "B-36 In Action (# 42)" are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) B-36 A & B; 3) B-36 C; 4) Adding Jet Power: B-36 D, RB-36 D & RB-36 E; 5) B-36 F, B-36 H, RB-36 H & B-36 J; 6) B-36 Wings, 1955; 7) XC-99; 8) YB-60 and 9) FICON & Tom-Tom.  In addition to an informative narrative, "B-36 In Action (# 42)" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 100 black and white photographs; 2) About 33 black and white illustrations; 3) 6 color illustrations; 4) 4 color side aircraft profile illustrations; 5) 1 multiple-view B-36 D black and white illustration with specifications and 6) 3 color cover paintings.  This book is 50 pages and is in very good condition.  The authors are Meyers K. Jacobsen & Ray Wagner with Don Greer (illustrations).  Edition published in 1980.
