The book, Battle at Corricks Ford: Confederate Disaster and Loss of A Leader, chronicles the events surrounding this Civil War engagement which occurred on July 13, 1861. The story behind this battle is that of an outmanned Confederate Army led by General Robert S. Garnett, attempting to escape from the much larger Union forces commanded by General George B. McClellan. In 1861, Robert S. Garnett was considered among the most accomplished and competent generals serving in the Confedrate Army. Despite General Garnett's abilities and the courage of his men, he was out-manned and out-gunned and eventually both succumbed to General McClellan's superior forces. In the end, the "Battle of Corrick's Ford" is a tale of immense suffering and sacrifice, lost opportunities and the death of the first general officer to occur on either side during the Civil War. While this battle is but a footnote in the larger 1861 Virginia campaign of Major General George McClellan, and his victory at Rich Mountain, it was part of a series of engagements that ultimately led to the Confederacy's loss of the western portion of Virginia and ultimately to the creation in 1863 of the State of West Virginia. The major sections of this book include the following: 1) Foreword; 2) First to Fall; 3) An Ordeal in the Wilderness; 4) Appendix A - Notes and 5) Appendix B - Bibliography. In addition to an informative narrative of the battle, this book includes the following features: 1) 4 black and white vintage photographs; 2) 6 black and white illustrations and 3) 2 maps. This book is 28 pages and is in like-new condition. The author is W. Hunter Lesser. Edition published in 1993.
