The Bell X-1 was a purpose built rocket propelled joint research aircraft developed by Bell Aircraft for flight testing by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and the United States Army and later United States Air Force (U.S.A.F.). While the X-1 had been flown as a glider and later as a rocket powered aircraft by a number of civilian test pilots beginning with its maiden flight over Florida on January 25, 1946, it is perhaps best remember as the aircraft piloted by U.S.A.F. pilot Captain Chuck Yeager on the first recorded supersonic flight on October 14, 1947. This X-1 was named Glamorous Glennis in honor of Chuck Yeager's wife. The X-1 and later variants continued to be flown for research purposes through early 1949. The flight data collected by the N.A.C.A. and the U.S.A.F. in the X-1 test program provided a basis for American Aviation supremacy in the latter half of the 20th century. The famous Glamorous Glennis is now housed in the Milestones of Flight Gallery in the National Air and Space Museum located in Washington D.C.. This older Bell X-1 scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic U.S.A.F. markings for the X-1 flown by Captain Chuck Yeager when he achieved supersonic flight; 2) Clear plastic cockpit glass; 3) Detailed cockpit; 4) Detailed landing gear; 5) Recessed panel lines and 6) Illustrated assembly instructions. The box is in like-new condition. Never started and factory sealed.
