The book, Camouflage & Markings: Lockheed P-38, F-4, F-5 Lightning, U.S.A.A.F., E.T.O. (1942 - 1945) No. 18, is a concise but authoritative review of the paint schemes and markings used on the Lockheed P-38, F-4 and F-5 Lightning's operated by the U.S.A.A.F. in the E.T.O. during the 1942 to 1945 timeframe.  This book reviews the many changes in both paint schemes and markings that were used on the various variants of the Lightning produced and operated during this time frame.  In general, the paint schemes evolved based on changes in the operational requirements faced by the U.S.A.A.F. units flying this legendary fighter.  In the E.T.O., the tops and sides of the Lightning were painted in Dark Olive Drab while the underside was finished in Neutral Gray.  Once aerial supremacy had been established later in the war, the P-38 was often left in a bright aluminum finish that saved time and lowered the overall weight of the aircraft.  The national insignia in the form of a white star painted on a blue circle was later replaced with the more modern white star on blue roundel along with a white bar of either side of the star.  Serial numbers, as well as, unit and aircraft identification characters also evolved during the war.  The use of unique "nose-art" on individual aircraft occurred irrespective of the underlying paint scheme throughout the war.  As was the case with most aircraft operating in the E.T.O., the Lightning also carried black and white invasion stripes during the D-day landings and for several months thereafter.  Once airfields had been established on the continent, the invasion strips were deleted and the overall appearance on the aircraft sides and top reverted to the standard Dark Olive Drab.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Camouflage & Markings: Lockheed P-38, F-4, F-5 Lightning, U.S.A.A.F., E.T.O. (1942 - 1945) No. 18" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 13 black and white photographs; 2) 1 black and white illustration; 3) 4 color illustrations; 4) 4 pages of black and white aircraft camouflage & markings; 5) 5 side aircraft color illustrations; 6) 1 table highlighting Eighth, Ninth, Twelfth & Fifteenth Air Force P-38 Unit Codes and 7) 1 table highlighting Eighth, Ninth, Twelfth & Fifteenth Air Force P-38 Squadron Colours & Symbols.  This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in building an accurate Lockheed P-38, F-4 or F-5 Lightning, E.T.O. scaled model.  This book is 22 pages and is in very good condition.  The author is R. A. Freeman.  No edition publishing date given.
