The Cessna 172 is a four-seat, single engine, high-fixed wing aircraft that has been in production since 1955. Measured in terms of longevity, the Cessna 172 is the most successful mass-produced light aircraft in United States history. The Cessna 172 equipped with a tricycle landing gear had as its predecessor the Cessna 170 tail-dragger. The Cessna 172 has also been converted to carry floats instead of a conventional fixed landing gear and is a favorite among light aircraft sport pilots. The rugged and versatile Cessna 172 (L-41 Mescalero) has also been manufactured for the United States Air Force and United States Army as a pilot training aircraft. To date, the number of Cessna 172 (L-41) of all variants produced exceeds 43,000. The Cessna 172 Sea Plane has a maximum level flight speed of 132 mph.
