The film, Civil War Combat: The Wheat Field At Gettysburg, chronicles the events leading up to and the actual battle that took place on day three as part of the broader confrontation now known as the battle of Gettysburg.  Until July 1863, most of the major battles of the Civl War had been faught on Confederate soil.    General Robert E. Lee was determined to change this by driving home the war into the Northern state of Pennsylvania.  General Lee launched his attack into Pennsylvania, despite poor intelligence reports that all but left him unaware of Union troop movements.  While the Confederate soldiers enjoyed some initial success against Northern troops, General Lee allowed his exhausted soldiers to rest which gave Union forces vital time to reinforce their positions.  When the the two great armies finally clashed near the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg, the battle of "The Wheatfield" saw some of the bloodiest hand-to-hand combat anywhere on the battlefield.  The battle of Gettysburg remains one of the most dramatic actions in American military history and to many represents the turning point in the Civil War against the Confederacy.  Introduction and closing comments by Roger Mudd.  Full screen in color.  Released in 199.  Runtime 50 minutes.
