General Buller's campaign in Natal in 1899, and the subsequent defeats at Colenso and Spioenkop, represent a defining moment in British military history.  In these engagements, the army that had won and maintained a great empire was humbled by a militia made-up of South African frontier farmers known as the "Boers".  The author places these battles in context and explains the failure of a professional army which was skilled in the fighting techniques of the nineteenth century when up against an enemy whose weapons and tactics foreshadowed the warfare of the twentieth century.  The format of this book includes the following: 1) Assessment of each commander's campaign strategy; 2) Chronicles the progress of the fighting; and 3) Includes a brief guide to the battlefields today. In addition, this book contains more than 90 illustrations including maps, charts and color plates which accompany the text and a series of three-dimensional battle maps that serve to mark the critical stages of the battle.  This book is 96 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Ian Knight with David Chandler (general editor).  Edition published in 1995.
