While the definition of a sports car through the ages has never been straightforward, few would dispute the claim that the Chevrolet Corvette is among the elite marques in this vehicle market segment. The status of this vehicle marque has grown steadily since the first, fairly uninspiring model was first introduced. The book, Corvette The Classic Marque, chronicles the story from the first vehicle which was powered by a weak, straight six cylinder truck engine to the phenomenal 180 m.p.h. RPO ZR1 which was available in the late 1980s. During this period of time, the Corvette has gone through three major body style changes, escalating engine capacities and performance, race successes and a succession of designers who had faith in the sports car ethos. Some of the influential designers who had a hand in beginning and evolving the Corvette brand include; Zora Arkus-Duntov, Larry Shinoda and Dave McLellan. The story of the Corvette is also a tale of intense rivalry with Ford and the Shelby Cobra which took place on many race tracks across the country. The major sections of this book are as follows: 1) Introduction - Setting The Stage; 2) From Stylist's Fancy To Driver's Dream; 3) Into Its Own; 4) Corvette Sports / Racers; 5) The 1963 - 1967 Sting Ray; 6) The Long-Lived Stingray; 7) The Current Generation; 8) Spotter's Guide; 9) Index and 10) Acknowledgements. In addition to an informative narrative, "Corvette The Classic Marque", includes the following features: 1) Approximately 35 black and white photographs; 2) About 208 color photographs; 3) 3 black and white illustrations and 4) 6 color illustrations. Some of the above illustrations were specially commissioned by the author while others came from either contemporary documents or General Motor's own archive. This book is sure to appeal to anyone interested in the Chevrolet Corvette history or more generally in the sports car market segment. This book is 128 pages and is in excellent condition. The author is John Lamm. Edition published in 1989.
