In 1865, Lt. John Dunbar, is rewarded for his heroism in the Civil War by being granted his request for assignment in the western frontier before it is gone. He is subsequently assigned to an abandoned fort where a Sioux tribe is his only neighbor. After overcoming cultural and language barriers, Dunbar gradually becomes friends with the Indians including a white woman who has been raised since birth by the tribe. Dunbar slowly assimilates the ways of the frontier Indians and is even included in one of their breathtaking buffalo hunts. ALthough Dunbar is happy with Indians and their way of life, he is tormented by his knowledge of the fate which will evenually befall the tribe. In the end he is faced with a critical decision that will cause him to examine his soul before making a heroic choice that will seal his destiny.
