The Dassault Mirage is a single jet engined, single seat supersonic fighter interceptor designed and primarily built in France by Dassault Aviation. The Mirage represented a second generation French jet that made its first flight in 1956, was formerly introduced into French Air Force Squadrons in 1961 and is still used as a front-line fighter in many countries today. In all, over 1,400 Mirage IIIs of all variants have been built to date and have been primarily flown by the French and Pakistani Air Forces. Other countries whose air forces have used Mirage IIIs include among others Chile, Egypt and Libya. Perfornance characteristics for the E variant were as follows: 1) Top speed of almost 1,500 m.p.h.; 2) An Extended range of about 1,500 miles and 3) A maximum service ceiling of approximately 56,000.
