The book, Desert Storm Special - Land Power: The Coalition And Iraqi Armies, weighs up the armies that confronted each other across the Saudi border in Kuwait and the deserts of southern Iraq. The author lays out the considerable strengths and weaknesses that characterized each side. Areas that are explored in detail include the following: 1) Ammunition types; 2) Attack helicopters; 3) Combat engineering; 4) Defended positions; 5) Long range artillery; 6) Scud missiles; 7) Small arms; 8) Special Forces; 9) Spy satellites; 10) Threat of biological and chemical warfare; 11) Tanks; 12) Training and 13) Weapons systems. As the author reviews the background and historical context of Operation Desert Storm, he places emphasis on the equipment and organization of the combatant forces. While it appears on the surface like the Coalition Forces held all the cards, the Iraqi's did have the advantage of defended positions and long range artillery. As circumstances would prove, however, this was not nearly enough to ward of the inevitable. To the point, American General Schwarzkopf's command succeeded in combining many nationalities, organizations and equipment in the most potent fighting force assembled in one geographic area since World War II. This book is sure to appeal to both the "arm-chair general" and military historian alike. In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 37 black and white photographs; 2) About 17 color photographs; 3) Approximately 16 black and white illustrations and 4) 4 maps. This book is 64 pages and is in excellent condition. The author is Tim Ripley. Edition published in 1991.
