While American car companies did not manufacture automobiles during World War II, their factories were busier than ever producing war supplies including aircraft engines, artillery, bombers, Jeeps, shell casings, tanks, torpedoes and trucks among many other items.  Although these companies had no product to sell, their advertising in magazines and newspapers did not decrease during the war.  Instead, the domestic automakers used their marketing talents to produce brand loyalty and patriotism.  The book, Detroit Goes To War, chronicles the American auto industry's role as the main military supplier prior to and during World War II.  This book presents a history of the major military battles to add context for descriptions of car and truck factories becoming the chief source of materials for the United States armed forces fighting on all combat fronts during the war.  It also gives the reader an idea of what was happening on the "home front" where sacrificing everyday comforts in the name of patriotism sometimes produced labor and social conflicts involving those who thought they had already given enough.  The major sections of the book, Detroit Goes To War: The American Auto Industry In World War II, includes the following major sections: 1) Acknowledgments; 2) Introduction; 3) Business as Usual - 1940-1941; 4) Color gallery; 5) Dark Days Indeed - 1942; 6) Kilroy was Here - 1943; 7) Oversexed, Overfed and Over Here - 1944; 8) "The Golden Gate in '48" - 1945; 9) Epilogue and 10) Index.  In addition to a very informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) 9 black and white photographs; 2) Approximately 170 black and white wartime advertisement illustrations and 3) About 22 color wartime advertisement illustrations.  Overall, this book represents a fascinating look into how the "Arsenal of Democracy" with the support of most businesses and citizens was able to beat back the Axis forces of evil during World War II.  This book is 160 pages and is in like-new condition.  The author is V. Denis Wrynn.  Edition published in 1993.
