In 1932, Trans World Airlines (TWA) circulated specifications to a number of commercial aircraft manufacturers for a tri-motor, 12 passenger airliner to compete against the Boeing twin engine Model 247.  The eventual winner of this competition was the Douglas DC-1, which had the greatest capacity, speed and range of any of the submitted designs.  Development from testing of the DC-1 twin engine, low wing airliner with retractable landing gear led to the DC-2, which because of its power and sleek lines made it an instant favorite of many of the leading airlines in the 1930s.  American Airlines among other carriers liked the basic DC-2 design concept but wanted to be able to provide sleeper service to replace the Curtiss Condor bi-plane airliners then in service.  The answer was the DC-3, a stretched version of the DC-2, which could accommodate 14 sleeper or 21 seats.  In addition to the DC-3 being longer than the DC-3, it also included a more rounded fuselage and upgraded 1,000 horsepower, later increased to 1,250 horsepower, Twin Wasp radial engines.  Since the debut of the DC-3 in December 1935, over 13,000 civilian DC-3, military C-47 along with foreign copied Li-2 and Li-2 D aircraft have been manufactured.  As a testament to the importance of the DC-3 in aviation history, General James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle while attending the retirement of North Central’s N21728 commented: “The DC-3 without question is the most versatile, fixed wing aircraft ever built.  I know of no other machine that has saved so many human lives.”  This Douglas DC-3 "Legends Of Aviation" scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for a DC-3 commercial airliner flown by KLM, Pan American Airway Systems & Swissair; 2) Clear plastic cockpit window and wing mounted headlights; 3) Detailed landing gear; 4) Molded in light-gray colored plastic; 5) Recessed panel lines; 6) Painting guide and 7) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in Very Good condition but does have worn corners.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
