The origins of the A-1 Skyraider date back to 1944 when the United States Navy put out a request to Douglas Aircraft Corporation to develope a new single engine, single pilot, piston engined driven assault aircraft to replace the venerable SBD Dauntless type naval bomber. Prototype examples of the Skyraider were first flown in the summer of 1945 which resulted in production examples not being available before the end of World War II. Production proceeded at a lower pace and by the the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, the Skyraider was finally able to prove itself. The Skyraider provided much needed tactical and close in air support for troops fighting on the ground and could deliver all manner of ordnance including bombs, missiles and rockets. Following the conclusion of the Korean War in 1953, the Skyraider continued in inventory and went on to be used in the Vietnam war beginning in 1963 as a close in air support fighter bomber over the jungles of this Southeast Asian country. The Skyraider could had a top speed of 325 m.p.h. and had the following dimensions: 1) Height 12 feet; 2) Length 38 feet 5 inches and 3) Wingspan 50 feet. This older, already built Douglas Skyraider model was part of the Bachman "Mini-Planes" series available for sale in the late 1960s up through the 1970s. This Douglas Skyraider model features the following: 1) Hand decorated; 2) Moving parts and 3) Super detailed. The box is in very good condition.
