The book, Eighth Air Force Story, chronicles the history of the Eighth Air Force highlighting the aircraft used, the units formed and the bombing missions flown by this American air force during World War II. The Eighth Air Force was established on February 22, 1944 as a renaming of the VIII Bomber Command at High Wycombe Airdrome in England. From its inception until the German surrender in early May 1945, the Eighth Air Force engaged in operations primarily in Northern Europe carrying out strategic bombing of Axis targets in occupied France, as well as, the Low countries and in Germany. During World War II it was the largest United States Army Air Corps air force units deployed in terms of numbers of aircraft, equipment and personnel. The major sections of the "Eighth Air Force Story" are as follows: 1) Introduction And Acknowledgment; 2) Eighth Air Force History; 3) Fighter Markings; 4) Other Units and 4) Eighth Air Force Aces. In addition to an informative narrative, the "Eighth Air Force Story" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 112 black and white vintage photographs; 2) 15 black and white side aircraft profile illustrations including camouflage & unit identification markings and 3) Multiple pages detailing about 80 different black and white illustrations of aircraft tail identification markings.
