The book, Enemy On Island. Issue In Doubt. - The Capture Of Wake Island, December 1941 is a pictorial record of the battle of Wake, of the years its surviving defenders spent in Japanese POW camps and of the endearing legacy of this battle to the United States and the United States Marine Corps. While the author acknowledges that there have been a number of previous books on this subject, he feels that this book contains the most comprehensive collection of wartime photographs ever assembled. This battle, which took place in the dark days following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, showed that even against great odds, the American fighting spirit was alive and well. In fact, while the Japanese plans called for the island to be captured in at most several days, the reality is that it took the aggressors 16 days to finally prevail. During this timeframe, the United States Marine Corp managed to sink a number of enemy vessels, shoot-down countless aircraft and inflict tremendous casualties amongst the invading Japanese soldiers. While this battle lifted the spirits of the folks at home, for the survivors, it represented 44 long months of cruel captivity. With the exception of the Marines captured at Guam and North China and the sailors taken from the USS Wake gunboat, the Wake defenders endured the longest imprisonment of any American service men or women captured during World War II. The major sections of this book are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Acknowledgments; 3) Photo Credits; 4) Pre War History; 5) The Battle, First Phase: Dec. 8-11, 1941; 6) The Battle, Second Phase: Dec. 12-23, 1941; 7) The POW Experience; 8) The Japanese Occupation of Wake: Dec. 23, 1941 - Sept. 7, 1945; 9) Legacy of Wake Island and 10) Appendix. In addition to informative picture captions, this book includes the following: 1) Approximately 159 black and white photographs and 2) about 24 black and white illustrations. Also adding context to this pictorial study are the following eight maps: 1) Pacific Ocean; 2) Wake Island Defenses; 3) Surface Action of 11 Dec. 1941; 4) U.S. and Japanese Naval Operations About Wake 21-24 Dec. 1941; 5) Situation on Wake 0400, 23 Dec. 1941; 6) Situation on Wake at Time of Surrender; 7) Japanese Landing on Wilkes and 8) U.S. Counterattack on Wilkes.
