The Bismarck was one of Nazi Germany's deadliest battleships afloat during World War II. In 1941, the Bismarck had been assigned the deadly and sceret mission to escape British detection and break-out into the Atlantic Ocean where she was supposed to ravage the northern supply convoys headed from the United States to Great Britain. In effect she was to supplement Hitler's U-boat offensive and use of Luftwaffe aircraft to hunt and sink Allied ships. As the Bismarck was about to break-out into the open Atlantic Ocean she encountered the H.M.S. Hood which was the British Navy's largest battleship. In a short exchange of gunfire the Hood was sunk and the Bismarck proceeded into the open Atlantic only to be attacked by British Swordfish torpedo bombers. The Bismarck sustain rudder damage and was eventually sunk by a combined British fleet intent on her destruction. The book, Exploring the Bismarck, tells the fascinating story of the life and death of this legendary ship through the eyes of four German sailors who survived the sinking of their ship. This book also chronicles Robert Ballard's suspenseful search and dramatic discovery of the Bismarck using Argo which is the same unmanned underwater vehicle used to discover the Titanic.
