The F4U Corsair was considered to be the best carrier based fighter during World War II. Produced by the Chance-Vought company, it proved to be a fast, rugged and reliable fighter during the many island hopping campaigns in the Pacific Ocean combat theater. F4U Corsairs were flown by the United States (U.S.) Marines, U.S. Navy, the British Fleet Air Arm, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The first Corsairs went into operation with the U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal during 1943 and quickly gained supremacy over the Japanese Zero and Oscar fighter aircraft fielded by the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Air Forces. This older, 35 piece F4U Corsair scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for the following aircraft a) F4U-1 D flown by VF-84, b) F4U-1 A of VF-17 or c) F4U-1 A as flown by Pappy Boyington of VMF-214 (Black Sheep Squadron); 2) Clear plastic canopy; 3) Detailed landing gear; 4) External stores including a center line fuel drop tank, 8 missiles and 2 bombs; 5) Propeller spins; 6) Recessed panel lines and 7) Illustrated assembly instructions. The box is in like-new condition. Never started and factory sealed.
