The book, F-51 Mustang Units Over Korea (Osprey Frontline Colour # 1) chronicles all of the users of the North American F-51 / RF-51 Mustang during the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 through 1953. When the Korean War broke out in late June 1950 the United States Air Force's standard fighter in the Far East was the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star. While this aircraft soon proved superior over the aircraft fielded by the North Korean Air Force, its lack of endurance resulted in the United States Air Force rushing 145 World War II era F-51 Mustangs into the combat theater. The F-51 Mustangs quickly commenced fighter-bomber operations against North Korean troop columns moving south on the Korean Penisula. The primary American fighter-bomber units flying the F-51 in Korea included the 8th, 18th and 35th Fighter-Bomber Wings. In addition to the American units flying the F-51 Mustang, the South African Air Force's Number 2 Squadron along with the Royal Australian Air Force's Number 77 Squadron flew them as well. The Republic of Korea Air Force was also trained to fly the Photo-Reconnaissance Mustang variant, the RF-51D, during the war. By the time hostilities ended with a truce in 1953, 194 Mustangs of all variants had been lost due to the following causes: 1) 10 to enemy fighters; 2) 12 in operational accidents and 3) 172 to enemy anti-aircraft fire. The major sections of "F-51 Mustangs Units Over Korea (Osprey Frontline Colour # 1)" are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Chapter One - Organised Confusion; 3) Chapter Two - 35th Fighter Bomber Group; 4) Chapter Three -8th Fighter Bomber Group; 5) Chapter Four - 18th Fighter Bomber Group; 6) Chapter Five - Tactical Reconnaissance Over Korea; 7) Chapter six - The RoKAF and 8) Appendices.
