The Kawasaki Ki 61 Hein Swallow (Tony) went into production in August, 1942 as the Army Type 3 Fighter Model 1 Hein but did not see action until June, 1943. It was the first Japanese fighter aircraft designed with self sealing fuel tanks and pilot armor, making it a more durable fighter and able to take quite a bit of punishment and still be effective in battle. It was also the only mass produced single seat, in-line engined Japanese fighter to be deployed during the war. The book, Famous Airplanes Of The World # 5: Army Type 3 Fighter "Hein", is a Japanese publication with only limited English translation of captions under some pictures. Included in this hard to find book which traces the operational history of the Ki 61 Hein used by the Japanese Army Air Force during World War II are: 1) approximately 74 period black and white photographs; 2) 2 pages of tail unit markings and 3) 7 pages of scale and other line drawings. This book is 56 pages is in very good condition but does have 3.00 written in grease pencil midway up the front cover on the left side. Note: the picture shown is of the same book but without the referenced marking. Edition published in 1984.
