The book, Fifteenth Air Force Story, chronicles the history of the Fiftheenth Air Force highlighting the aircraft used, the units formed and the bombing missions flown by this American air force during World War II. The Fifteenth Air Force was activated on November 1, 1943 in Tunis, Tunisia as part of the United States Army Air Forces operating in the Mediterranean combat theater during World War II. The first commander of the Fifteenth Air Force was General Jimmy Doolittle famous for leading a group of B-25 Mitchell bombers from the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet in a mission against Japan in 1942. The 15th Air Force resulted from the reorganization of Doolittle's Twelfth Air Force and the Ninth Air Force commanded by Lewis H. Brereton. Eventually the Ninth Air Force would "relocate" to England and was used as a tactical air force in support of the Normandy invasion. The Fifteenth remained after the departure of the Ninth Air Force and continued to grow as new bomb groups were formed with the arrival from the United States of additional aircraft and aircrews. When the Allies invaded southern Italy in late 1943, a number of air bases were captured and soon put into use by the Fifteenth Air Force. The Fifteenth Air Force continued to fly strategic bombing missions against occupied southern France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and the Balkans for the remainder of the war.
