The Fairey Firefly MK. V was the best known of the newer generation of Fireflies that began to enter operational service in 1947.  This newer generation consisted of Marks 4, 5 and 6 and were used for fleet reconnaissance and anti-submarine missions.  These three Firefly variants possessed little exterior difference and were all based on the well-known MK. I variant which equipped 19 different Fleet Air Arm Squadrons during World War II.  During the subsequent Korean War, Mark 4, 5 and 6 Fireflys operated from the Royal Navy carriers HMS Theseus, Glory, Ocean and Triumph along with the Australian Navy carrier Sydney.  The aircraft depicted in this Fairey Firefly MK. 5 (Series 2) kit belonged to 817 Squadron of the Royal Australian Navy and operated from the HMAS Sydney during the Korean War.  The Fairey Firefly MK. 5 carried a pilot and observer and was armed with four 20 mm cannon and could carry sixteen 60 lb rockets or two 1,000 lb. bombs.  The 2,245 h.p. Griffon engine gave the Firefly a top speed of 386 m.p.h. at 14,000 with a service ceiling of just over 28,000.  This older, out-of-production Fairey Firefly MK. 5 model is molded in light blue plastic and includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for an aircraft operated by the Royal Australian Navy; 2) Clear three piece canopy; 3) Optional position wings; 4) Pilot and Observer figures and 5) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in very good condition but does have some original packaging tape on the sides of the box.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
