The movie, Flags Of Our Fathers, is the epic World War II film centered on the United States landing on the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima in February, 1944 and the aftermath that followed for three of the surviving members of the Marine squad that planted the second  American flag at the top of Mount Suribachi.  The director's approach to the filming of this movie was to move back and forth with the three main characters between the battle for Iwo Jima, their participation in the flag planting, the subsequent bond tour and their expereinces with the public later in life.  The realistic battle scenes are filmed in an "Apocalypse Now" style and feature air full of thick plumes of smoke, zinging bullets and pounding explosions.  Perhaps the most interesting part of the movie comes as the three surviving Marines are paraded in front of the American public, as they vacilate between embarrassment and anger at the public relations campaign they find themselves embroiled in, while also appealing for additional funds to support the soldiers still at war.  The cinematography deftly couples vast panoramic battle scenes with haunting contemplative moments between the touring soldiers.  This film was made from the American perspective of the battle and a subsequent movie, Letters From Iwo Jima, provides the Japanese viw of this famous event that change the lives of all that participated in it.  Starring Jamie Bell, Ryan Phillippe and Robert Patrick among others.  Full screen in color.  Released in 2006.  Runtime 132 minutes.
