The book, Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Described (Part 1) is an Australian publication and represents the first installment of a pictorial review focused on the legendary Fw 190 flown so successfully during World War II by the German Luftwaffe and by the air forces of other allied Axis countries from 1941 through to the end of World War II in Europe in May of 1945. When the Focke Wulf Fw-190 first appeared on the Western European front in the Autumn of 1941 it gave the Allied air forces quite a shock as it was a very formidable opponent. It could out-turn, out-run and out-dive the Supermarine Spitfire V, which was the best fighter the British R.A.F. then had. While the Spitfire V could out-turn the Fw-190, the latter had a superior roll rate. In addition to performing the role of interceptor, a number of Fw-190 variants were specifically designed to carry bombs on external "hard-points" and thus performed the role of fighter-bomber. While perhaps not the equal of late model American P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs, the Fw-190 A variant in the hands of a skilled Luftwaffe pilot, was able to hold its own against these aircraft throughout the end of World War II. Part 2, of Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Described reviews the FW 190 D-9 "Dora" and the Ta-152, which were both developed late in World War II as interceptors capable of taking the fight to the high altitudes used by the American heavy bombers that were systematically destroying Germany's industrial and petrol industries from 1944 through to the end of the war in Europe in May 1945. The major sections of "Focke-Wulf FW 190 Described (Part 1) are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) The Fw 190 A Series; 3) Technical Description - Fw 190 A-3 with the following aircraft sub-sections: A) Fuselage; B) Empannage; C) Wing; D) Undercarriage; E) Cockpit Controls; F) Fuel System; G) Electrical System; H) Engine; I) Armament & J) Performance; 4) Fw 190 A-4 / U8 Fighter Bomber with the following aircraft subsections: A) Airframe; B) Various Equipment; C) Armament; D) Weights; E) Tankage & F) Performance and 5) Performance (Fw 190 V.
