The Focke-Wulf Fw-190 was a German single seat, radial engined fighter introduced by the Luftwaffe into combat in 1941.  In total, there were over 20,000 Fw-190s of all variants produced by the end of World War II including just over 1,800 of the D-9 version which is the subject of this kit.  The Fw-190 D-9 nicknamed the "Dora" was specifically developed to allow the basic design to operate more effectively at high altitudes.  The D-9 was notable for using a liquid cooled Jumo 213A engine which necessitated the lengthening of the fuselage, as well as, by a longer wingspan which allowed the airfoil to operate more efficiently at high altitudes.  The D-9 had the following operational characteristics: 1) Top speed of approximately 425 m.p.h. at altitude; 2) Combat range of 500 miles and 3) Service Ceiling of over 37,000 feet.  These operational characteristics, along with being armed with two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns and four 20 mm MG 151 cannons, allowed it to be a very formidable opponent against most late war Allied fighters.  In practice the Luftwaffe, late in the war, often used Fw-190 D-9s as a high altitude screening force for the operation of the new Me-262 twin jet engined fighter which was very vulnerable while taking off and landing.  This Focke-Wulf Fw-190 D-9 model which is molded in an army green color includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for an aircraft operated by the Luftwaffe in 1944 and 1945; 2) Clear two piece canopy that been be assembled in the closed or open position; 3) Detailed Junkers Jumo 213 engine that been seen through removable engine panels; 4) Detailed landing gear that can be mounted in the closed or open position; 5) Recessed panel lines and 6) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in excellent condition.  Never opened and factory sealed.
