The Fokker VII b "Southern Cross" was a tri-motor, high wing commercial aircraft that set numerous long distance flying records beginning in 1925.  Beginning life as a Fokker F-VII this aircraft was rebuilt and modified by the Boeing Company in the United States explicitly to attempt a number of long distance flying records.  The Foker F-VII was purchased after the rebuild by Charles Kingsford-Smith and Charles Ulm for a Pacific Ocean flight they were planning.  Christened the "Fageol Flyer" and "Spirit Of California", five attempts were made to fly across the Pacific Ocean.  Later, christened again as the "Flying Cross" the Fokker tri-motor took off from California on May 31st, 1928, with a new sponsor, Capt. Alan Hancock along with Kingsford-Smith and Ulm on a long distance trip across the Pacific Ocean to Brisbane Australia.  This successful flight took 83 hours and 38 minutes to complete.  After being registered in Australia, the "Southern Cross" was the first aircraft to be flown nonstop across Australia from Point Cook to Perth.  On June 25th, 1928, The "Southern Cross" took off from Sydney on a trip to England where the aircraft and creww arrived 12 days, 18 hours later.  The "Southern Cross" was next shipped to Holland for refurbishment after which it was flown back to England.  Later, with Kingsford-Smith as pilot, Evert Van Dyk as co-pilot, John Stannage as radio operator and Capt. Paddy Saul as a navigator, the "Southern Cross" took off from Portmarnock, Ireland flying east to west across the Atlantic Ocean on a planned flight to the United states.  A fuel shortage forced them to land in Newfoundland.  Subsequently the "Southern Cross" was flown to New York and on to San Francisco thus becoming the first aircraft to circumnavigate the world.  The "Southern Cross" later flew as a civilian airliner in Australia and was eventually retired to a specially built hanger for display.  The "Southern Cross" was powered by three 225 hp 9 cylinder Wright Whirlwind JC5 air-cooled radial engines and had a top speed of 120 mph.  This older, out-of-production Fokker VII b - Southern Cross scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic "Southern Cross" detailed markings; 2) Clear plastic cockpit & cabin glass areas; 3) Clear plastic display base; 4) Detailed radial engines; 5) Molded in silver-gray colored plastic; 6) Seated pilot and copilot figures 7) Simulated fabric covering; 8) Spinning propellers; 9) Two ground crew figures; 10) Painting instructions and 11) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in very good condition with minor wear on the corners.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
