  The book, Fourteenth Air Force Story, chronicles the history of the Fourteenth Air Force highlighting the aircraft used, the units formed and the bombing missions flown by this American air force during World War II.  The Fourteenth Air Force was established on March 5, 1943 in Kunming China.  This American air force is a descendant organization of the famed 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) also known as the "Flying Tigers" which commenced air operations against the Imperial Japanese Army on behalf of the Chinese government beginning on December 20, 1941.  During World War II, The Fourteenth Air Force was assigned first to the U.S. Army Forces, China-Burma-India Theater, effective, March 10, 1943 and then later to the U.S. Forces, China Theater around October 24, 1944.  From 1943 until the end of World War II in the Pacific combat theater in 1945 the Fourteenth Air Force conducted both strategic and tactical bombing missions against Japanese forces in Burma, China and the Japanese Home Islands.  In addition to offensive missions, the Fourteenth Air Force defended Allied bases and was instrumental in airlifting cargo "over-the-hump" from India to American and Chinese military forces operating in both Burma and China.  The various fighter aircraft flown in the Fourteenth Air Force during World War II included Curtiss P-41 Warhawks, Republic P-47 Thunderbolts, North American P-51 Mustangs and Northrop P-61 Black Widows.  The bomber aircraft operated by the Fourteenth Air Force during World War II included Consolidated B-24 Librators, North American B-25 Mitchells and Boeing B-29 Super Fortress' aircraft.  Cargo aircraft operated by the Fourteenth Air Force during the 1943 to 1945 timeframe primarily included Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commandos and Douglas C-47s.  During World War II the Fourteeth Air Force, was commanded by the former AVG commander, Major General Claire Chennault.  The major sections of the "Fourteenth Air Force" are as follows: 1) Fourteenth Air Force History; 2) Map of China Area; 3) Fourteenth Air Force Markings (23rd, 51st, 81st & 311th Fighter Groups, the 308th & 341st Bomb Groups and Other Units); 4) Some Other Planes In China and 5) Fourteenth Air Force Aces.  In addition to an informative narrative, the "Fourteenth Air Force Story" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 118 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 11 black and white illustrations and 3) 3 maps.  This book is 64 pages and is in very good condition.  The authors are Kenn C. Rust and Stephen Muth.  Edition published in 1977.
