The book, GM: The First 75 Years Of Transportation Products, represents a nostalgic pictorial review of GM's first 75 years of operations. Accompanying this book is a letter from then GM Chairman Roger B. Smith to General Motors Employees highlighting the many achievements accomplished by GM between 1908 and 1983. As is pointed out in this letter, between 1908 and 1983 GM had produced over 235 million transportation products worldwide. In this 75-year period, GM provided jobs to millions of people, generated new business opportunities for thousands of dealers and suppliers and made significant contributions to many communities across America and paid back billions of dollars in dividends to those who invested in the Corporation. A copy of "GM: The First 75 Years Of Transportation Products" was mailed out to every GM employee on record in 1983 along with Roger B. Smith's cover letter. This book is all the more interesting today given the recent upheaval in the automobile industry, the closure of the Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn Divisions and the bankruptcy reorganization of GM's remaining operations under the control of the United States Government. The major sections of "GM: The First 75 Years Of Transportation Products" is as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Chapter 1 (1772-1895) The American Automobile; 3) Chapter Two (1897 - 1919) The Beginnings Of GM; 4) Chapter Three (1920-1929) The Early Years Of GM; 5) Chapter Four (1930-1939) Depression And Recovery; 6) Chapter Five (1940-1949) The War Interrupts; 7) Chapter Six (1950-1959) Styling Sets The Pace; 8) Chapter Seven (1960-1969) Marketing Of Performance; 9) Chapter Eight (1970-1979) The Years Of Transition; 10) Chapter Nine (1980-1984) Challenge Of The Future; 11) Production Figures and 12) Credits.
