The movie, Gallipoli, is an Australian film centered on the events surrounding the ill-fated World War I battle in which Australian and New Zealand troops set out to capture Istanbul. Mistakes by the top military commanders led to a disaster in which the foot soldiers were bogged down on the landing beach. Every attempt to leave the landing beach area and attack the Turkish soldeirs lead to many casualties. Eventually, the Allied soldiers were forced to withdraw and conceed the battle to the "Turks". Beyond the battle, the film early on establishes the friendships that developed between the soldiers prior to enlisting and how each of them wanted to go off to war before they new the true horrors that war could bring. Starring Mel Gibson, Mark Lee and Robert Grubb among others. Widescreen in color. Released in 1981. Runtime 111 minutes.
