The book, Gettysburg chronicles the events that took place during this epic American Civil War battle that was fought from July 1-3, 1863 between the Union and Confederate Armies at the tiny crossroads town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In June, 1863 events were set in motion for this battle when a crack Confederate Army commanded by Robert F. Lee took his forces around the Union Army defending Washington D.C. and marched deep into Pennsylvania. When the Union Army realized what had happened, they too marched north to intercept the invaders. Fate choose the town of Gettysburg for the scene of one of the bloodiest and arguably the most crucial engagements of the American Civil War. When the battle was over, more than 50,000 soldiers from both sides had been killed. This battle, however devastating from a casualty perspective, turned the tide of the Civil War in favor of the Union. While a number of southern led border raids occurred during the remainder of the Civil War, the Confederate forces were never again able to take the fight to the north in sizeable numbers. As the momentum of battle shifted from the south to the north, the Confederate Forces increasingly found themselves on the defensive through to their final defeat in Virginia in 1865.
