The movie, Glory - Special Edition, recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers often overlooked by the history, the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts which was a troop of volunteer black men who fought to help win the freedom of their enslaved brothers. This movie is based on the historical novels One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchand and Lay This Laurel by Lincoln Kirstein along with the private letters of Robert Gould Shaw. This movie was filmed in Georgia and Massachusetts. It follows the true story of a youthful Colonel Shaw as he takes control and trains to fight the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. The climatic battle takes place on July 18, 1863 when Colonel Shaw volunteers his regiment in the initial charge to capture Fort Wagner from the Confederate soldiers. This very realistic vision of the horrors of war is a moving examination of a lost piece of Civil War history.
