The book, Great Generals Of The Civil War And Their Battles, reviews the careers of ten of the most notable commanders of the war including five frome each side of this titanic conflict. Each survey describes in detail the events and decisions that shaped their most significant battles and campaigns. While few Americans are unacquainted with the Civil War's major events including the battle of Gettysburg which pitted General Meade from the Union against General Lee from the Confederacy and the General Sherman's devastating march through Georgia, this book offers a level of understanding that goes deeper than this. "Great Generals Of The Civil War And Their Battles" reviews the men who led the forces in these battles and their attempts to master the many new problems encountered on the battlefield. Of note, the American Civil War was one of the last great conflicts where the top commanding generals both controlled the positioning of their armies and who frequently led troops into battle. Since the commanding general was so intimately involve in the execution of a given battle plan, the conduct of key battles fought reflects directly on the personality of the generals involved. As an aside, this tendency to lead from the front lines helps to explain why so many generals fell in battle during the four years that the Civil War was waged. The ten generals surveyed and the key battles they participated are as follows: 1) Thomas Jonathan Jackson (First & Second Manassas Valley Campaign; 2) James Ewell Brown Stuart (Peninsular Campaign, Antietam & Brandy Station; 3) Robert E. Lee (Chancellorsville); 4) George Gordon Meade (Gettysburg); 5) Ulysses S. Grant (Shiloh & Vicksburg); 6) George Henry Thomas (Chickamauga & Chattanooga); 7) Nathan Bedford Forrest (Fort Donelson, Fort Pillow & Brice's Cross Roads; 8) Joseph Eggleston Johnston (Chattanooga to Atlanta); 9) William Tecumseh Sherman (Siege of Atlanta & March to the Sea); 10) Philip Sheridan (Shenandoah Valley Campaign & Siege of Petersburg); 11) Coda: Grant And Lee (Appomattox); 12) Index and 13) Acknowledgements. In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 65 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 131 black and white illustrations; 3) Approximately 50 color illustrations and 4) 3 maps.
