The two-seat, twin-turbo propeller Grumman OV-1A/JOV-1A Mohawk was developed during the late 1950s to perform the military roles of artillery spotting, communication and tactical reconnaissance.  The Mohawk was developed in direct response to a 1954 United States Department Of Defense tender for a new aircraft, which could be used to perform the tasks mentioned above, which had been performed during World War II by the American Piper Cub, British Westland Lysander and the German Fiesler Storch.  The Mohawk had a strange appearance owing to a wide cockpit area with side-by-side seating, extensive cockpit glass areas and a tail unit sporting three vertical stabilizers.  The test flight stage of the Mohawk’s development began in the spring of 1959 and lasted until 1961.  While the United States Navy initially considered the Mohawk for use on smaller escort aircraft carriers, their interest waned and the final development of this unique aircraft was promoted solely as a United States Army aircraft.  The first production OV-1As arrived with the United States 7th Army in Germany in February 1961.  These initial units were used for photoreconnaissance duties in the European theater of operations.  Initial front-line feedback lead to changes being made to the front of the cockpit that improved access; reinforcement of the undercarriage for rough airfield operations and improvements to the electronics capabilities for the use of the Mohawk for tactical reconnaissance missions.  Fifty-four aircraft were subsequently modified with six external pylons that could be used to carry containers of 2.75-inch missiles, 500 pound bombs, or 5-inch Zuni missiles.  Known as the JOV-1A, these aircraft were sent to Vietnam where they underwent tests with the 23rd Special Aviation Group.  While this testing convinced the United States Army to abandon the use of the Mohawk for offensive missions, the additional pylons were retained often being used to carry defensive armament to protect the aircraft while performing tactical photoreconnaissance missions during the remainder of the Vietnam War.  This Grumman OV-1A/JOV-1A OV-1 Mohawk scaled model includes markings for the following four aircraft: 1) S/N 59-2617, 23 “Special Warfare Aviation Detachment”, Vietnam, 1963; 2) S/N 60-3736, 225 Aviation Company, “Phantom Hawks”, flown by Captain Mike Langer, Vietnam, December 1964; 3) S/N 60-3729, 23 “Special Warfare Aviation Detachment”, Vietnam, 1964 and 4) S/N 63-13125, 73 Aviation Company (AS), An Xugen Province, flown by LT. Johnson, Vietnam, September 1964.  This Grumman OV-1A/JOV-1A OV-1 Mohawk scaled model also includes the following features: 1) Clear plastic multi-piece canopy; 2) Detailed cockpit; 3) Detailed landing gear; 4) Molded in brown-gray colored plastic; 5) Open or closed fuselage speed brakes; 6) Recessed panel lines; 7) Two rocket launchers; 8) Two types of bombs; 9) Framable color Grumman OV-1A Mohawk color illustration; 10) Painting guide in color and 11) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in new condition.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
